How to Communicate Better with Your Caregiver
Communication and caregiving go hand-in-hand. A caregiver can’t provide the proper care without the right communication, but it’s also true that communication is important to the one being cared for and their family. If you’re working with a caregiver to help take care of mom or dad, or if you have a caregiver yourself, these tips will help you get what you need from this important relationship.

Set clear expectations
The most important aspect of communication and caregiving is setting clear expectations. Every relationship is different, and the needs of each client can vary widely. That’s why it’s important to set clear expectations.

Simple expectations are important. They include when the caregiver should show up, when they should leave, and what duties are their responsibility while they are in the home.

However, don’t be afraid to set other expectations too. If there are certain areas of the home that are off limits, or if there’s a certain way you would like to be addressed, don’t be afraid to ask.

Be open and honest
Being open is important in all relationships, which includes caregiving. The more open you are with your caregiver, the better relationship and rapport you can build, and the more enjoyable it will be to spend time with each other.

Honesty is important too. If something isn’t working, or you’re thinking about a change in service, bring it up with your caregiver or their agency directly.

Communication and caregiving don’t have to be the reason why you or your loved one is frustrated with the kind of care they are receiving. You can build a positive relationship with your caregiver while ensuring you or your loved one receives the exact care they need to be happy, healthy and safe at home.
